From Our Past President
          Howard Graham (FS 80-87)
It has been an interesting last few years and taking over the OSB Presidency in September 2020 has meant I’ve had somewhat of a muted tenure. My message has always been let’s connect more with old friends. The more we connect the stronger the Society becomes, and as a group, the more active we can become the more support we’re likely to build for the school, and at this time the school needs our support in anyway we can give it. Pupil numbers are growing slowly and the future is certainly brighter for St Bees School than it has been, mainly due to the characters who are driving the process of rebuilding. Our school has always been a place where character was built, and at least in some small way for every former pupil, it has made us what we are today. The teachers in my time were a massive part of that character-building and I feel the same applies now with those that are driving the school forward. The Headmaster is a good example. I have no idea of his teaching credentials, but he certainly has the right character to take our unique school back to its former glory. So, if you are able, please support the refurbishment appeal that was recently launched, and is mentioned elsewhere in this Bulletin, in any way you can (further information can be found here: https://www.stbeesschool.co.uk/st-bees-school-appeal/).
I have so enjoyed catching up with old friends at various OSB Dinners and socials, culminating in the Black Tie Dinner on OSB Day on the 25th June at the school. The theme at these events when chatting to those attending is always, why haven’t we done this sooner? So, plan ahead, get a table or a small group together for your most local dinner and use it to reconnect with old friends and make new ones; I promise you, the effort is worth it.
A personal plan, long in the making, means I'm unable to continue the role and it has now come to a close. I have handed over to another 'rugby nut', the very capable Carter Croft (FN 60-65). I will however be trying to catch up with Old St Beghians far and wide over the next few years, so please keep an eye out in the Bulletin and the OSB social facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/427579695153162/?ref=share_group_link (Even if you are not on Facebook it's worth joining this one group just for some of the hair cuts in the old photos posted!)
I wish Carter all the best in his role of building a stronger OSB Society through your help.
          Let’s connect!
          Howard Graham (FS 80-87).
